How a deeper self-understanding can help you raise children who thrive
Authors: Daniel J.Siegel, M.D., and Mary Hartzell, M.Ed.

About the book:
A child psychiatrist and an early childhood expert reveal that the first step in raising happy and healthy children is to fully understand and learn from your very own childhood experiences

How many parents have found themselves thinking: I can't believe I just said to my child the very thing my parents used to say to me! Am I just destined to repeat the mistakes of my parents? In Parenting from the Inside Out, child psychiatrist Daniel J. Siegel and early childhood expert Mary Hartzell explore the extent to which our childhood experiences shape the way that we parent. Drawing on stunning new findings in neurobiology and attachment research, they explain how interpersonal relationships directly affect the development of the brain, and offer parents a step-by-step approach to forming a deeper understanding of their own life stories that will help them raise compassionate and resilient children.

About the Authors:
Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., received his medical degree from Harvard University and completed his post graduate medical education at UCLA. The author of the internationally acclaimed The Developing Mind, a pioneering book on neurobiology and attachment, he is currently in private practice and an associate clinical professor of psychiatry on the faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain and Development at UCLA.

Mary Hartzell, M.Ed., received her master's in early childhood education and psychology from UCLA, and is a child development specialist and parent educator. She has taught children, parents and teachers for more than thirty years and is the director of a highly respected Reggio-inspired preschool in Santa Monica, California. Reviews:
"This is not just a book for those committed to being the best possible parents they can be. Parenting from the Inside Out is for anyone committed to a continued and deeper understanding of the human psyche and to looking beyond the presentational self to what is really motivating us. It is applicable to all of our interpersonal relationships, but most especially to our most treasured one: the one with our children."
- Michele Pfeiffer, mother and actor

"This book uniquely pairs the clinical experience of a psychiatrist with the deep wisdom of a nursery school teacher. Together Siegel and Hartzell delicately peel back the many layers of parenting to reveal the pure nature of the relationship at its core."
-Neal Halfon, M.D., MPH, professor of pediatrics, UCLA and editor, Child Rearing in America
